The cultural and natural heritage of Île de Ré

This bachelor thesis focuses on the cultural and natural heritage of the French island Île de Ré. The first part of the thesis is theoretical, and it opens with the geographical and climatic introduction of the island. Consequently, the genesis of human activity on the island is being analysed with the main focus on agricultural traditions such as winemaking, oyster farming, and salt extraction. These traditions have been passed down through generations for centuries, and their development, the tools required for work, and the challenges faced by farmers are presented. Because these activities are carried out in a highly biodiverse area, attention is also paid to the flora that thrives in salt water and the fauna, especially the large number of birds that find refuge in the abundant salt marshes. Next, the thesis focuses on a crucial part of the local economic profit: tourism. Tourism on the Île de Ré was significantly on the rise after the end of the Second World War, and in 1988, it was further strengthened due to the construction of a bridge connecting the island to the mainland in La Rochelle.
